Let’s discover the cinema of the future
The industry section of the REC Festival is still celebrating its tenth edition in 2023, an event that demonstrates the constant growth and evolution of the Festival’s professional activities. The REC 2023 Professional Laboratory, which will take place from November 23 to 26, reaffirms itself as a successful platform for emerging creators and marks a decade of professional success.
The professional program dedicated to the development and market possibilities for new film projects includes a Professional Workshop, One-to-one meetings and the Screening Test.
The College of Industrial Engineers of Catalonia, the College of Architects, the Pati Jaume I of Tarragona City Hall will be the spaces that will host the various industry sessions this year. This year, as it was done last year, the industry section of the REC will open its doors to the public with a Screening Test (test screening) around the cinema “raw” from a still unreleased production, which will take place on November 26.
PLAY Acció Cultural and REC International Film Festival of Tarragona organize the RECLab with the support of Acción Cultural Española, ICAA -through the Ministry of Culture and Sport- and the European Union, through the Next Generation Fund program. The First Test also receives the support of the Catalan Institute of Cultural Enterprises (ICEC), the Provincial Council of Tarragona and the City Council of Tarragona.
A development and rehearsal space for post-production projects
The main focus of the Professional Laboratory of the REC Festival is the Primer Test, which also has the collaboration of Catalan Films, the Málaga Festival, PÖFF Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, Deluxe and CineMart in Rotterdam.
It is a development and rehearsal space for cinematographic projects in the post-production phase that seek to receive the advice of a careful selection of international experts.
This year the Primer Test faces the tenth edition, which will take place on November 24 and 25, where international programmers and sales agents will meet emerging state directors and producers. The Primer Test sessions consist of the viewing of 9 film projects to discuss their success and entry into the global film market. It also allows its participants to build a network of contacts in a sector in constant transformation.
During these ten editions, the Primer Test has been the key to the success of some of the most awarded films in recent years. An example of that success are films like 20,000 SPECIES OF BEES by Estíbaliz Urresola; CORK by Mikel Gurrea or RAMONA by Andrea Bagney.
On the one hand, 20,000 SPECIES OF BEE passed through RECLab 2022 and starred in blind Screening Test. This year, it has been one of the most celebrated films of this year, deserving, among others, of the Silver Bear at the 73rd Berlin International Festival 2023 and the Golden Biznaga and the award for Best Supporting Actress, both in the Malaga Festival.
This success is added to other notable films that found their springboard in the Primer Test of the REC Festival, such as SURO, which joined RECLab 2021—the only laboratory in which it participated—and last year returned to the Festival in the Official Section a Opera Prima Competition, after having won and obtained great recognition in several festivals around the world.
This year the First Test Tasting will take place, a selection of projects that can be viewed outside of competition and that stand out for their strength and originality. Despite not opting for the prizes, the teams that have made them will be able to participate in the networking and work meetings that will take place within the framework of the RECLab.

This year, a total of 9 projects are competing for the awards of the Primer Test 2023. Starting with previous editions, the selected projects emphasize new state talents and demonstrate the growing national and international recognition of the industry section of the REC Festival.
