Returning to Tunisia for her uncle’s funeral, Lilia reconnects with a family that knows nothing about her life in Paris, especially her love life. Determined to unravel the mystery surrounding her uncle’s sudden death, Lilia confronts family secrets within a household where three generations of women live together amidst silence and traditions.
Leyla Bouzid (a familiar face at REC, having previously visited with “As I Open My Eyes” and “A Tale of Love and Desire”), crafts a story about women caught between fears, traditions, and the legal and social challenges of pursuing relationships that defy convention. Beyond questions of sexual identity and the weight of the social context, “Tres mujeres” explores those moments when passing on love is not enough to set another person free. The family home becomes a space where secrets are passed down from one generation to the next, where silence serves as a way of coexisting, yet also as a form of violence, and where shame and expectations become an inheritance. With hints of a detective story and the playful formal elements characteristic of her filmography, Leyla Bouzid’s third feature is a moving family drama, rich in tenderness, love, and secrets.
