Mariam is a rebellious, nonconformist young woman who has lived in Spain for ten years, until she is deported to Western Sahara. There, she finds herself feeling as though she belongs nowhere, neither to the Europe where she grew up, nor to the country where she was born. She struggles to carve out a space for herself, caught between a family that seems unable to understand her and a society that looks upon her with disapproval. Against this backdrop, a series of controversial decisions forces Mariam to confront the true meaning of belonging.
Exploring displacement and the search for identity, Eimi Imanishi’s debut feature, marked by beautiful cinematography and magnetic performances, skillfully blends the political with the poetic. Set in Laayoune, a city in Western Sahara occupied by Morocco, “Nomad Shadow” is a moving story about the quest to find one’s place in the world.
