Selected for the Tallinn Film Festival. Premiere in Spain
Actor Jon Bass’ debut is a dizzying gambit that could really only exist in our current reality. Originally conceived in 45 parts (!) for TikTok, “Carole & Gray” plays and brings us between the warmly familiar and the bracingly imaginative. It’s a story as old as time: a guy gets dumped by his girlfriend, the same guy is tasked with going to find the dog of his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend (and friend) on the Upper East Side and bringing it back to Brooklyn, and he, of course, accepts.
The film seduces you with grace, an irresistible self-confidence and a taste for the absurd that recalls the good old days of American indie in the 90s. It’s vital, meta and gloriously crazy. A group of friends get together to make a movie, they had little to say and yet they do it (damn them!). But the most daring thing is the simple question… how the hell did they get away with it?
Surprising and tremendously funny, a priceless WTF. The small (big) surprise of this year’s REC is a real antidote for those who hate the vertical format.
