Selected for the Rotterdam Film Festival. Premiere in Catalonia
Suzanne Césaire, a writer, professor and feminist activist from Martinique, was a pioneer of Afrosurrealism and a key figure in the Negritude movement. The Ballad of Suzanne Césaire is not a conventional biography, but an exploration of her life through a group of filmmakers who investigate her legacy. The film, starring César winner Zita Hanrot, follows an actress and early mother who, while preparing to play Césaire, begins to hear voices that connect her to the writer.
Known for her ability to explore the realities of black women, Madeleine Hunt-Ehrlich breaks the mold of the traditional biopic and offers a poetic and sensorial exploration of the life of Suzanne Césaire. Through fragmentary montage and a non-linear narrative, the director invites us to build our own image of this woman who challenged conventions and paved the way for future generations.
