After being pushed out of the presidential race, Chema, a young Mexican politician, retreats with his wife Carmina to a family estate. Their withdrawal spirals into delirium: they crown themselves king and queen of an invented kingdom, turn the staff into “courtiers” and fill the house with decadent ceremonies, capricious punishments and increasingly cruel rituals.
With the stamp of quality from the producers of Roma by Alfonso Cuarón, and taking The Favourite and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie as main references, Versalles is a satirical fable that reveals the true face of the ruling classes with irony, theatrical exaggeration and an impressive setting where a traditional Mexican estate transforms into the Versailles court of Louis XVI.
