GEN REC

The Festival REC initiative to engage young people in the world of cinema and cultural management

After two editions, the program has become a strong commitment of the festival to youth and culture in Tarragona, offering participants the opportunity to learn from active professionals, gain experience, and open doors to a future within the cultural sector. Among others, GenREC is developed through three main activities:

  • Joves programadors is a training program where participants learn, step by step and alongside industry professionals, how a film festival is designed and organized. At the end, in a workshop session, they create their own real programming proposal, which becomes part of that year’s edition of the REC.
  • Jurat Jove, on the other hand, invites young people to experience the festival from the inside, attending all screenings in the Opera Prima section and jointly deciding the winning film of the Young Jury Award.
  • Projecte Educatiu MIRA’M, active since 2002 and aimed at secondary school students in the Tarragonès area, combines screenings and discussions with film crews to foster new audiences and critical reflection. Over the years, more than 5,000 students have taken part, with the support of institutions and local educational centers.

In parallel, GenREC expands through collaborations with cultural and social institutions in the city, such as the Pepita Ferré Library, and through established activities like Talent Local, the short film section dedicated to local creators, which also features round tables and training activities.

Through GEN REC we want to get to know the youngest and help them develop their cinematographic concerns and we do this with a training program called ‘Young Programmers’ and an expansion of the Festival’s Youth Jury.

The REC International Film Festival of Tarragona presents the 3rd edition of the Young Programmers programme, an initiative aimed at young people aged 18 to 30 with a passion for cinema and an interest in discovering how a film festival is organised from the inside.

If you’re always the one choosing the film when you go to the cinema, if you can’t stop making lists on Letterboxd, or if you simply live cinema as an essential part of your everyday life, this programme is for you.

Throughout the course, participants will take part in a practical and participatory journey that will immerse them in programming and cultural management. Through 4 in-person classes and a final workshop day, guided by active professionals, participants will learn first-hand how a film festival is conceived, communicated, and organised.

At the same time, they will have the opportunity to watch exclusive films, reflect on their selection, and finally design their own programming proposal within the festival. As the final activity, they will be responsible for curating and presenting the Talent Localsection, giving visibility to emerging creators from the territory.

The training sessions will take place on October 9, 16, 23, and 30, and November 6, and it is essential to attend at least 4 out of the 5 scheduled sessions, as well as several screenings during the Festival itself.

Once the programme has been completed, a short evaluation will be carried out and different recognitions will be awarded to the winners:

  • REC Festival (Tarragona) Exclusive access to all screenings and RECLab accreditation, the festival’s industry lab, with direct contact with emerging filmmakers.
  • Málaga Talent (Festival de Málaga) A 10-day immersive experience within one of the most important festivals of Spanish and Latin American cinema. It includes practical workshops, exclusive masterclasses, and meetings with top-level professionals. In addition, it offers the chance to live alongside other young talents from around the world, creating contacts and opportunities that can shape the future of their careers.

Registrations will close on Tuesday, September 30th.

Places are limited!

The Jurat Jove, with a well-established trajectory at the Festival since its creation in 2013, is expanding the number of places this year to give more space to the young, dynamic and engaged audience of the territory. If you are between 18 and 30 years old, passionate about cinema and eager to make your voice heard, this is your moment: you can become part of the REC Festival’s Jurat Jove.

It is a unique opportunity to experience the Festival from the inside: enjoy the screenings and the atmosphere, meet the guests and young talents coming from the Málaga Festival, connect with other cultures and make your voice heard.

As members of the Jurat Jove, participants will attend all the screenings of the International Opera Prima competition. Based on their evaluations, and after a collective deliberation, they will decide which film deserves the Jurat Jove Award.

Must be available from December 3 to 8

Throughout several participatory actions, the GEN REC initiative will give space to the youngest to promote knowledge of the cultural world, enriching experiences, and the possibility of enjoying the Festival from the inside.

One of the most influential initiatives in the fabric of the city is, without a doubt, the MIRA’M Educational Project. Developed with the collaboration of several agents, it is one of the oldest initiatives of the Festival, as it has been carried out since the second edition, in 2002. It is a series of screenings for high school students, focused on promote the creation of new audiences and the discussion of various topics of interest. At the end of the screenings, the students have the opportunity to talk with members of the film’s team in a dynamic debate. This is an activity open to all secondary school teachers and students in the Tarragonès region and from 2019 to training centers with students with various abilities.

Over the years, more than 5,000 students from all the IES in the region have gone through the MIRA’M sessions, sharing experiences, concerns and emotions with creators, specialists and special guests, creating moments that will last in their memory .

Supported by the Tarragona City Council and the Tarragona County Council, the project also has the collaboration of the Tarragonès Regional Council, which liaises with the IES of the region, as well as providing them with transport for those who do not they come from the city.
